Fact Sheet on Pride and Heritage

* Pride and Heritage: A Celebration of the A/PI LGBT Communities (“Pride and Heritage”) is a series of events to celebrate Asian/Pacific Islander lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lives during May, which is National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, an observance passed by Congress in 1992.

* 2007 marks the 8th year the A/PI LGBT community has hosted an event to commemorate National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

* The goal of the Pride and Heritage is to celebrate and empower the A/PI LGBT community in the metro Washington DC area.

* The series is being planned by four local agencies that serve or support LGBT Asian and Pacific Islanders:

A/PI Queer Sisters (APIQS) (www.apiqsdc.org)

An organization for Asian and Pacific Islander lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning women in the DC metropolitan area. They are a support, social networking, educational, and political organization focusing on queer API issues.

A/PI Queers United for Action (AQUA) (www.aquadc.org)

AQUA strives to promote the positive outlook and welfare of A/PI queer men through advocacy, education, outreach, and social events.

KhushDC (www.khushdc.org)

KhushDC is a social, support and political group that provides a safe and supportive environment, promotes awareness and acceptance, and fosters positive cultural and sexual identity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning (LGBTQ) and additional gender or sexual minority South Asians in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum – DC Chapter (www.napawf.org)

The mission of NAPAWF-DC is to build an Asian Pacific American women’s movement among those who believe in advancing social justice, and addressing the concerns and increasing the rights of APA women and girls.

* The winners of our 3rd annual Pride and Heritage Awards, given to LGBT A/PI activists and allies to our community, are Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project and Donald R. Verde. Previous winners of our award include John Tinpe and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (2005), and Gita Deane and APA Film (2006).
